America has often been coined the melting pot of the world. That is because in America we have many different types of people, who come from different places, are entrenched in different cultures and who practice different religious beliefs. Unfortunately being different is not always accepted.
Religious belief is something that is held sacred by most and often times can lead to arguments, violence and even war. In America it is common for people of different religious beliefs to be harassed. One place in which harassment often occurs is in the workplace.
If you feel that you are being harassed at work for your religious beliefs you should begin to take immediate action to protect your personal freedom.
Here are 4 ways you can protect yourself against religious harassment in the workplace.
1. Log every incident of harassment against you. This includes keeping a journal of your personal thoughts and feelings as well as keeping a record of any harassing messages such as emails, voicemails, pictures, etc.
2. Confront the harasser. Let them know how you feel. Ask them to stop immediately.
3. File your first complaint of harassment with the appropriate authority. If you are being harassed by a co-worker immediately notify your supervisor. If it is your supervisor who is being the harasser you can contact your HR department. If you are a part of a union you should contact your union representative.
4. If nothing comes of your complaints you should contact the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). You might want to also consider consulting an attorney for protection.
After you have submitted your complaint against the harasser there is a possibility of retaliation by either the harasser or the company. If this grows to be too much to handle the best thing for you to do may be to look for a new job.
